The Institute of Linguistic Studies at the Ilia State University presents the Online Dictionary of Idioms developed under the financial support of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation. The Online Dictionary of Idioms includes data from different sources as Oniani, A., Georgian Idioms. Tbilisi: Nakaduli, 1966, Sakhokia, T., Dictionary of Georgian Figurative Words and Expressions. Tbilisi: Merani, 1950-1955; Chikobava Arn., Georgian Explanatory Dictionary, Tbilisi, 1950-1964 and 2008-2010, Μπαμπινιώτης Γ., Λεξικό της Νέας Ελληνικής γλώσσας. Αθήνα: Κέντρο λεξικολογίας, 1998; Σιαμανίδου, Σ., Ελληνογεωργιανό Λεξικό. Τιφλίδα: Λόγος, 2009, Δεμιρη-Προδρομίδου, Ε., Νικολαïδου-Νέστορα, Δ., Τρύφωνα-Αντωνοπούλου, Ν., Η γλώσσα των ιδιωτισμών και των εκφράσεων. Θεσσαλονίκη: University Studio Press, 1983 etc. At this moment, the Online Dictionary of Idioms includes about 8500 entries. The monolingual part of the dictionary is illustrated by citations taken from the Corpus of Modern Georgian Language. In some cases the entries in the Georgian – Modern Greek dictionary are equipped with literal translation in square brackets that helps user to find appropriate meaning of idiom in the source language.
The search system of the Online Dictionary allows the search for Idiomatic Expressions by keywords or phrases as well as alphabetically (see User’s Guide).
The Online Dictionary of Idioms is intended for specialists of Georgian and Modern Greek.
